In watercraft, a racing shell (also referred to as just a fine boat (UK) or just shell) is an extremely narrow, and often comparatively long, rowing boat specifically designed for racing or exercise. It is outfitted with long oars, outriggers to hold the oarlocks away from the boat, and sliding seats. The boat's long length and semicircular cross-section reduce drag to a minimum. This makes the boat both fast and unstable. It must be balanced by the rowers to avoid tipping. Being able to balance – or "set" – the boat while putting maximum effort into the oars is therefore an essential skill of sport rowing.
There are two different types of rowing: sweep rowing and sculling. Both of these methods are equally effective when trying to lose weight, but there are minor differences between them. So, let us understand the difference and how each one of them is effective.
The main difference between sweep rowing and sculling is that in sweep rowing, each person holds one oar with both hands. While in sculling, every rower holds two oars (one oar in each hand).
Sculling is when athletes use two oars, one oar in each hand, to propel a boat in the water. Because each rower has two oars in their hands, the sculling can also be done by a single rower.
Drilling down a bit…in sculling, where one person has two oars, the most popular classifications of boats today are these:
A single scull (or a scull) is a rowing boat designed for a single person who propels the boat with two oars, one in each hand.
Laminated single skin construction, with pre-preg fibre glass exterior and pre-preg carbon fibre interior, with Nomex honeycomb cored saxboards. Additional carbon fibre reinforcement on gunwales and keel C. High temperature curing resin, heat cured in mold.
A quadruple sculling boat is designed for four persons who propel the boat by sculling with two oars, or "sculls", one in each hand.
Laminated single skin construction, with pre-preg fibre glass exterior and pre-preg carbon fibre interior, with Nomex honeycomb cored saxboards. Additional carbon fibre reinforcement on gunwales and keel C. High temperature curing resin, heat cured in mold.
Sweep rowing is when athletes use one oar to propel a boat in the water. Both the hands are on that one oar. And because every rower holds only one oar, in sweep rowing, there should be an even number of persons on the boat (that is in pairs) to move the boat straight with equal force involved on each side.
And in sweep rowing, where one person has one oar, the most popular classifications of boats today are:
A shell with 2 rowers. The coxless pair (2-), often called a straight pair, is a demanding but satisfying boat to master.
Laminated single skin construction, with pre-preg fibre glass exterior and pre-preg carbon fibre interior, with Nomex honeycomb cored saxboards. Additional carbon fibre reinforcement on gunwales and keel C. High temperature curing resin, heat cured in mold.
A shell with 4 rowers. Coxless fours (4-) are often referred to as straight fours, and are commonly used by lightweight and elite crews.
Laminated single skin construction, with pre-preg fibre glass exterior and pre-preg carbon fibre interior, with Nomex honeycomb cored saxboards. Additional carbon fibre reinforcement on gunwales and keel C. High temperature curing resin, heat cured in mold.
A shell with 8 rowers. Always with coxswain because of the size, weight and speed of the boat.
Laminated single skin construction, with pre-preg fibre glass exterior and pre-preg carbon fibre interior, with Nomex honeycomb cored saxboards. Additional carbon fibre reinforcement on gunwales and keel C. High temperature curing resin, heat cured in mold.
